Qur’anic Ayat on تہمت (False Accusation / Slander)
- The Qur’an strongly condemns false accusations (تہمت), calling it a great slander (بہتان عظیم), punishing it in both law and آخرت, and warning believers not even to speak or spread such claims without clear proof.
- تہمت = بوہتان (false accusation / slander)

| 24:4 | وَٱلَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ ٱلْمُحْصَنَٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَأْتُوا۟ بِأَرْبَعَةِ شُهَدَآءَ فَٱجْلِدُوهُمْ ثَمَٰنِينَ جَلْدَةًۭ وَلَا تَقْبَلُوا۟ لَهُمْ شَهَٰدَةً أَبَدًۭا ۚ وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْفَٰسِقُونَ | And those who accuse chaste women and do not produce four witnesses—lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept their testimony ever after; they are the defiantly disobedient. | اور جو لوگ پاک دامن عورتوں پر تہمت لگائیں پھر چار گواہ نہ لائیں، تو انہیں اسی کوڑے مارو اور ان کی گواہی کبھی قبول نہ کرو، یہی فاسق ہیں | Y quienes acusan a mujeres castas y no presentan cuatro testigos—azótenlos con ochenta azotes y no acepten su testimonio jamás; ellos son los perversos |
| 24:23 | إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ ٱلْمُحْصَنَٰتِ ٱلْغَٰفِلَٰتِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ لُعِنُوا۟ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ | Indeed, those who falsely accuse chaste, unaware, believing women are cursed in this world and the Hereafter, and for them is a great punishment. | بے شک جو لوگ پاک دامن، بے خبر، ایمان والی عورتوں پر تہمت لگاتے ہیں ان پر دنیا اور آخرت میں لعنت ہے اور ان کے لیے بڑا عذاب ہے | En verdad, quienes acusan falsamente a mujeres castas, inocentes y creyentes son malditos en esta vida y en la otra, y tendrán un gran castigo |
| 24:15 | إِذْ تَلَقَّوْنَهُۥ بِأَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَتَقُولُونَ بِأَفْوَاهِكُم مَّا لَيْسَ لَكُم بِهِۦ عِلْمٌۭ وَتَحْسَبُونَهُۥ هَيِّنًۭا وَهُوَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ عَظِيمٌ | When you were spreading it with your tongues and saying with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge, thinking it insignificant while it is great in the sight of Allah. | جب تم اپنی زبانوں سے اسے پھیلا رہے تھے اور ایسی بات کہہ رہے تھے جس کا تمہیں علم نہ تھا، تم اسے معمولی سمجھتے تھے حالانکہ وہ اللہ کے نزدیک بہت بڑی بات تھی | Cuando lo difundían con sus lenguas y decían lo que no sabían, creyendo que era leve, pero ante Allah es grave |
| 24:16 | وَلَوْلَآ إِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوهُ قُلْتُم مَّا يَكُونُ لَنَآ أَن نَّتَكَلَّمَ بِهَٰذَا ۖ سُبْحَٰنَكَ هَٰذَا بُهْتَٰنٌ عَظِيمٌ | Why, when you heard it, did you not say: “It is not for us to speak of this. Glory be to You; this is a great slander”? | جب تم نے اسے سنا تو کیوں نہ کہا کہ ہمیں ایسی بات نہیں کرنی چاہیے، پاک ہے تو، یہ بہت بڑا بہتان ہے | Cuando lo oyeron, ¿por qué no dijeron: “No debemos hablar de esto; esto es una gran calumnia”? |
| 24:13 | لَّوْلَا جَآءُو عَلَيْهِ بِأَرْبَعَةِ شُهَدَآءَ ۚ فَإِذْ لَمْ يَأْتُوا۟ بِٱلشُّهَدَآءِ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ هُمُ ٱلْكَٰذِبُونَ | Why did they not produce four witnesses? And since they did not produce witnesses, then it is they, in the sight of Allah, who are the liars. | وہ چار گواہ کیوں نہ لائے؟ جب وہ گواہ نہ لا سکے تو اللہ کے نزدیک وہی جھوٹے ہیں | ¿Por qué no presentaron cuatro testigos? Al no hacerlo, ante Allah ellos son los mentirosos |
| 33:58 | وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ بِغَيْرِ مَا ٱكْتَسَبُوا۟ فَقَدِ ٱحْتَمَلُوا۟ بُهْتَٰنًۭا وَإِثْمًۭا مُّبِينًۭا | Those who harm believing men and women without what they earned bear upon themselves a slander and a clear sin. | جو لوگ مومن مردوں اور عورتوں کو بلا وجہ اذیت دیتے ہیں وہ بہتان اور کھلے گناہ کا بوجھ اٹھاتے ہیں | Quienes perjudican a los creyentes sin razón cargan con calumnia y un pecado evidente |
