QUR’ANIC VERSES USING “IMAM / A’IMMAH”

KEY INSIGHTS

🟢 1. “Imam” = Not just one meaning

From Qur’an usage:

  • Leader of guidance (Prophets, righteous) Example: Ibrahim → “I will make you an Imam for the people” (2:124)
  • Leader of misguidance (calling to fire) Wrong leaders too (28:41)
  • Record / Book (Imam Mubeen) (36:12)
  • Scripture (Torah as Imam)

👉 So:
“Imam” = ANY guiding authority (good OR bad)

⚖️ 2. Two Types of Leadership

  • 🟢 Guiding Imams → by Allah’s command (21:73, 32:24)
  • 🔴 Misguiding Imams → calling to Hell (28:41)

🧬 3. Conditions for True Imamate

From (2:124, 32:24):

  • No ظلم (injustice)
  • Sabr (patience)
  • Yaqeen (certainty)

🔎 4. Deep Critical Point

  • Qur’an NEVER restricts “Imam” to:
    • Only political leader
    • Only religious scholar

👉 It is a functional role: whoever leads people (toward truth OR falsehood)

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:124)
وَإِذِ ابْتَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ رَبُّهُۥ بِكَلِمَـٰتٍۢ فَأَتَمَّهُنَّ ۖ قَالَ إِنِّى جَاعِلُكَ لِلنَّاسِ إِمَامًۭا ۖ قَالَ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِى ۖ قَالَ لَا يَنَالُ عَهْدِى ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ
And when Abraham was tested by his Lord with commands and he fulfilled them, He said, “Indeed, I will make you an Imam for the people.” Abraham said, “And of my descendants?” He said, “My covenant does not include the wrongdoers.”
اور جب ابراہیم کو اس کے رب نے چند باتوں میں آزمایا اور اس نے انہیں پورا کر دکھایا، تو اللہ نے فرمایا: ”میں تمہیں لوگوں کا امام بنانے والا ہوں۔“ ابراہیم نے کہا: ”اور میری اولاد میں سے؟“ فرمایا: ”میرا عہد ظالموں تک نہیں پہنچتا۔“
Y cuando su Señor puso a prueba a Abraham con mandatos que cumplió, Él dijo: “Ciertamente te haré un imán para la gente.” Dijo: “¿Y de mi descendencia?” Dijo: “Mi pacto no alcanza a los injustos.”
Surah At-Tawbah (9:12)
وَإِن نَّكَثُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ عَهْدِهِمْ وَطَعَنُوا۟ فِى دِينِكُمْ فَقَـٰتِلُوٓا۟ أَئِمَّةَ ٱلْكُفْرِ ۙ إِنَّهُمْ لَآ أَيْمَـٰنَ لَهُمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَنتَهُونَ
And if they break their oaths after their treaty and attack your religion, then fight the leaders of disbelief—indeed, there are no oaths for them—so that they might cease.
پھر اگر وہ اپنی قسمیں توڑ دیں اپنے عہد کے بعد اور تمہارے دین پر حملہ کریں تو کفر کے پیشواؤں سے لڑو، بے شک ان کی کوئی قسم نہیں، تاکہ وہ باز آ جائیں۔
Si quebrantan sus juramentos tras su pacto y atacan vuestra religión, combatid a los líderes de la incredulidad; en verdad, no tienen juramentos, para que desistan.
Surah Al-Isra (17:71)
يَوْمَ نَدْعُوا۟ كُلَّ أُنَاسٍۢ بِإِمَـٰمِهِمْ ۖ فَمَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَـٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يَقْرَءُونَ كِتَـٰبَهُمْ وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَ فَتِيلًا
The Day We will call every people with their Imam. Then whoever is given his record in his right hand—those will read their record, and they will not be wronged even as much as a thread.
جس دن ہم ہر گروہ کو اس کے امام کے ساتھ بلائیں گے، پھر جسے اس کا نامۂ اعمال اس کے دائیں ہاتھ میں دیا جائے گا تو وہ لوگ اپنا نامہ پڑھیں گے اور ان پر رتی برابر بھی ظلم نہ ہوگا۔
El día en que convocaremos a toda gente con su imán. A quien se le dé su libro en la derecha, esos leerán su libro y no serán perjudicados ni en lo más mínimo.
Surah Al-Anbiya (21:73)
وَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ أَئِمَّةًۭ يَهْدُونَ بِأَمْرِنَا وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِمْ فِعْلَ ٱلْخَيْرَاتِ وَإِقَامَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَإِيتَآءَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةِ ۖ وَكَانُوا۟ لَنَا عَـٰبِدِينَ
And We made them Imams guiding by Our command, and We inspired them to do good deeds and to establish prayer and give zakah; and they were worshippers of Us.
اور ہم نے ان کو امام بنایا جو ہمارے حکم سے رہنمائی کرتے تھے اور ہم نے ان کی طرف نیک کام کرنے، نماز قائم کرنے اور زکوٰۃ دینے کی وحی کی، اور وہ ہماری عبادت کرنے والے تھے۔
Y los convertimos en líderes que guiaban por Nuestro mandato, y les inspiramos hacer el bien, establecer la oración y dar el zakat; y eran adoradores de Nosotros.
Surah Al-Qasas (28:5)
وَنُرِيدُ أَن نَّمُنَّ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسْتُضْعِفُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَنَجْعَلَهُمْ أَئِمَّةًۭ وَنَجْعَلَهُمُ ٱلْوَٰرِثِينَ
And We intended to favor those who were oppressed in the land and make them Imams and make them inheritors.
اور ہم چاہتے تھے کہ ان لوگوں پر احسان کریں جو زمین میں کمزور بنا دیے گئے تھے اور انہیں امام بنائیں اور انہیں وارث بنائیں۔
Y quisimos favorecer a los oprimidos en la tierra y hacerlos líderes y hacerlos herederos.
Surah Al-Qasas (28:41)
وَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ أَئِمَّةًۭ يَدْعُونَ إِلَى ٱلنَّارِ ۖ وَيَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ لَا يُنصَرُونَ
And We made them leaders inviting to the Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection they will not be helped.
اور ہم نے انہیں ایسے پیشوا بنایا جو آگ کی طرف بلاتے تھے، اور قیامت کے دن ان کی مدد نہ کی جائے گی۔
Y los convertimos en líderes que llamaban al Fuego, y el Día de la Resurrección no serán auxiliados.
Surah As-Sajdah (32:24)
وَجَعَلْنَا مِنْهُمْ أَئِمَّةًۭ يَهْدُونَ بِأَمْرِنَا لَمَّا صَبَرُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا يُوقِنُونَ
And We made from among them Imams guiding by Our command when they were patient and were certain of Our signs.
اور ہم نے ان میں سے بعض کو امام بنایا جو ہمارے حکم سے رہنمائی کرتے تھے جب انہوں نے صبر کیا اور وہ ہماری آیات پر یقین رکھتے تھے۔
E hicimos de ellos líderes que guiaban por Nuestro mandato cuando fueron pacientes y tenían certeza en Nuestros signos.
Surah Ya-Sin (36:12)
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْىِ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ وَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَدَّمُوا۟ وَءَاثَـٰرَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَـٰهُ فِىٓ إِمَامٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ
Indeed, We give life to the dead and record what they have sent ahead and their traces; and all things We have enumerated in a clear Register (Imam Mubeen).
بے شک ہم مردوں کو زندہ کرتے ہیں اور جو وہ آگے بھیجتے ہیں اور ان کے آثار سب لکھتے ہیں، اور ہر چیز کو ہم نے ایک واضح کتاب (امام مبین) میں محفوظ کر رکھا ہے۔
En verdad, damos vida a los muertos y registramos lo que adelantaron y sus huellas; y todo lo hemos enumerado en un Libro claro (Imán manifiesto).
Surah Al-Ahqaf (46:12)
وَمِن قَبْلِهِۦ كِتَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰٓ إِمَامًۭا وَرَحْمَةًۭ ۚ وَهَـٰذَا كِتَـٰبٌۭ مُّصَدِّقٌۭ لِّسَانًا عَرَبِيًّۭا لِّيُنذِرَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ وَبُشْرَىٰ لِلْمُحْسِنِينَ
And before it was the Book of Moses as a guide (Imam) and a mercy; and this is a confirming Book in Arabic, to warn those who do wrong and as good tidings for the doers of good.
اور اس سے پہلے موسیٰ کی کتاب امام اور رحمت تھی، اور یہ کتاب عربی زبان میں تصدیق کرنے والی ہے تاکہ ظالموں کو ڈرائے اور نیکوکاروں کے لیے خوشخبری ہو۔
Y antes de él estaba el Libro de Moisés como guía (imán) y misericordia; y este es un Libro confirmador en lengua árabe para advertir a los injustos y dar buenas nuevas a los que hacen el bien.
