Qur’anic Ayat on War Etiquette (Rules, Limits & Justice)
The Qur’an establishes strict war ethics: no aggression, no ظلم, respect for peace, protection of life, and immediate cessation of fighting when the enemy stops, making justice and restraint central even in conflict.
Core Principles of War in Qur’an
From these ayat:
1. Only fight those who fight you 2:190
2. No transgression / ظلم – “Allah does not love transgressors”
3. Stop if enemy stops – 2:192, 2:193
4. Accept peace immediately – 8:61
5. No fighting peaceful people – 4:90
6. Honor treaties (no betrayal) – 8:58
7. Sanctity of life – 5:32

Indeed, Allah does not love transgressors. | اللہ کی راہ میں ان سے لڑو جو تم سے لڑتے ہیں، مگر زیادتی نہ کرو، بے شک اللہ زیادتی کرنے والوں کو پسند نہیں کرتا | Combatan en el camino de Allah a quienes los combaten, pero no transgredan; Allah no ama a los transgresores |
2:191 | وَٱقْتُلُوهُمْ حَيْثُ ثَقِفْتُمُوهُمْ… وَلَا تُقَٰتِلُوهُمْ عِندَ ٱلْمَسْجِدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ حَتَّىٰ يُقَٰتِلُوكُمْ فِيهِ… | And kill them wherever you encounter them… but do not fight them at the Sacred Mosque unless they fight you there… | اور انہیں جہاں پاؤ قتل کرو… اور مسجد حرام کے پاس ان سے نہ لڑو جب تک وہ تم سے وہاں نہ لڑیں… | Y mátenlos donde los encuentren… pero no luchen en la Mezquita Sagrada a menos que ellos los ataquen allí… |
2:192 | فَإِنِ ٱنتَهَوْا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ | But if they cease, then indeed Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. | پھر اگر وہ باز آ جائیں تو بے شک اللہ بخشنے والا مہربان ہے | Pero si cesan, Allah es Perdonador y Misericordioso |
2:193 | وَقَٰتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّىٰ لَا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌۭ… فَإِنِ ٱنتَهَوْا۟ فَلَا عُدْوَٰنَ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ | Fight them until there is no oppression… but if they cease, then no hostility except against the ظلم کرنے والے | ان سے لڑو یہاں تک کہ فتنہ ختم ہو جائے… پھر اگر وہ رک جائیں تو زیادتی نہ ہو مگر ظالموں پر | Combátanlos hasta que no haya opresión… pero si cesan, no haya hostilidad excepto contra los ظلم کرنے والے |
8:61 | وَإِن جَنَحُوا۟ لِلسَّلْمِ فَٱجْنَحْ لَهَا وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ | And if they incline to peace, then incline to it and trust in Allah. | اور اگر وہ صلح کی طرف مائل ہوں تو تم بھی مائل ہو جاؤ اور اللہ پر بھروسہ کرو | Y si se inclinan hacia la paz, inclínate tú también y confía en Allah |
8:58 | وَإِمَّا تَخَافَنَّ مِن قَوْمٍ خِيَانَةًۭ فَٱنبِذْ إِلَيْهِمْ عَلَىٰ سَوَآءٍ… | If you fear betrayal from a people, throw back their treaty to them fairly… | اگر تمہیں کسی قوم سے خیانت کا خوف ہو تو ان کا عہد برابر طور پر ان کی طرف واپس کر دو… | Si temes traición de un pueblo, devuélveles su pacto de manera justa… |
4:90 | فَإِنِ ٱعْتَزَلُوكُمْ فَلَمْ يُقَٰتِلُوكُمْ وَأَلْقَوْا۟ إِلَيْكُمُ ٱلسَّلَمَ فَمَا جَعَلَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ سَبِيلًا | If they withdraw from you, do not fight you, and offer peace, then Allah has not made for you a cause against them. | اگر وہ تم سے الگ رہیں، تم سے نہ لڑیں اور صلح پیش کریں تو اللہ نے تمہارے لیے ان پر کوئی راستہ نہیں رکھا | Si se apartan de ustedes, no los combaten y ofrecen paz, Allah no les da permiso contra ellos |
5:32 | …مَن قَتَلَ نَفْسًۢا بِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍ أَوْ فَسَادٍۢ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَكَأَنَّمَا قَتَلَ ٱلنَّاسَ جَمِيعًۭا… | Whoever kills a soul unjustly… it is as if he has killed all mankind… | جس نے کسی جان کو ناحق قتل کیا… گویا اس نے تمام انسانوں کو قتل کیا | Quien mata a una persona injustamente… es como si matara a toda la humanidad |
